In April 2019, Tuas Desalination Plant (TDP) was named the Desalination Plant of the Year at the 2019 Global Water Awards. These awards, which have been given out since 2006, recognise breakthrough achievements in the international water industry.
TDP was recognised for its use of ecologically sustainable technology, beating other strong nominees in the award category including desalination plants in Oman, Tunisia, and Egypt.
As the most compact and space-efficient desalination plant in Singapore, TDP is able to produce up to 30 million gallons a day of drinking water, equivalent to the water demand of about 200,000 households. It is the country’s most technologically advanced plant, with robust pre-treatment processes. More than half of TDP’s roofs are covered with solar panels that generate almost 1.4 million kWh of clean energy in a year, which contributes to meeting the plant’s energy needs.
