SRC Seawater Intake
Jurong Island, Singapore
HSL Constructor Pte Ltd was awarded in February 2012 as the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) Contractor by Main Contractor HQSM Engineering Pte Ltd for Singapore Refining Company sited on Jurong Island. The project consists of the construction of onshore and offshore structures with dimensions of 45.5m length and 17 m width, together with electro-chlorination unit and hoist crane supports.
The onshore section of intake pit is founded on 500mm diameter concrete spun piles, and some of which supported as king-post for the temporary structures. Offshore structure which comprises of five modular units, each weighing an average of 280ton was constructed by pre-casting off site using self-compacting concrete. The biggest challenges of this project were the installation of the precast modules, which necessitated dredging, diving works and heavy lifting. The team proactively identified and fixed the constraints much earlier which helped them in reducing the installation time, like pre-installation of temporary staging for modules, proper seabed preparation and consistent monitoring of variation in seabed. The modules were launched and installed by a 600MT heavy lift floating crane.
HSL Constructor Pte Ltd successfully delivered the intake structure with good quality works and on budget, by means of well planned construction methodology and concurrent onshore and offshore structures construction not only reduced the construction time but increased productivity as well. The commissioning of the seawater intake is targeted at the end of December 2013.
